Birthday Blog: My Fav Art of 2011-2017

So now we are entering the “modern” era of my artwork. And I’ve actually been producing quite a bit more the past few years than I did in 2005-2009… it just took a bit to get there. I produced absolutely no art whatsoever in 2014, only year for that to happen…

February 28, 2011 – ART POST: DOCTOR WHO
I doodled this for Chase for a valentine’s Day card – the original was coloured pencil, I scanned it in, cleaned it up and re-coloured it in photoshop.

February 2, 2012 – ART POST: SHE-RA
In early 2012 I did some drawings of some of my costumes – my plan was to draw them all to use as full-length reference shots in my portfolio. I got about 20 done before I got bored.

February 8, 2012 – ART POST: URD
Some of them weren’t great, but some of them I liked.

March 22, 2013 – VERY DISTANT LANDS
So this was just referenced off some official Adventure Time art, but I wanted to turn it into me and Indy. I know it’s not much but I love it.

December 10, 2013 – ARTWORK STUFF
Ok in my last post I mentioned I revisited some of the 365 Princesses to clean them up a bit… here’s the first stab at that. I tweaked the faces a bit, cleaned up some proportion issues and gave them a simple background. And here’s part 2. I really need to separate these out into individual files since it’s hard to see much in this big single image – but in the link above you can click on it for larger.

And like I said…absolutely nothing happened art-wise in 2014. How?! I dunno I usually at least doodle a bit, but if I did it never even made it online.

April 29, 2015 – A FEW THINGS
And here we are again a few months later, revisiting 365 stuff. One of the ones I redid was Mary Poppins – she got a huge overhaul, with a totally new face and fixed proportions and details on the dress.

And I also played with some of the Star Wars ones – for this one, the only thing I changed was the face to make it look a little more like Natalie and add a little shading.

October 19, 2015 – FIXING STUFF
In October I drew up some sort of vintage-y looking Leias and did a quick colour job on them.

October 21, 2015 – MORE ART STUFF
Hoth was my fav of the series though.

January 12, 2016 – SOME MORE ART
While sitting around watching netflix I decided to do some sketchy quick versions of Rey, and then Leia. Just quick sketches, cleaned up a bit and then painting over them without worrying about the edges. I ended up doing a whole series of these, though they got a little “cleaner” as I worked out what I wanted them to look like.

January 13, 2016 – MORE ART!
I refined it a little more for the next 2 I did – and I really love how the Padme turned out.

January 14, 2016 – SOME JEDI AND A TRAITOR
Seeing how quickly I did these and posted them made me realize I can still work fast when I want to. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan were some of my favs.

January 18, 2016 – WHERE DID I LEAVE OFF?
A ton more of these. They really got to be where they were just exercises in painting the faces and everything else was extra. Luke was my least favourite; it doesn’t look enough like him. But I did a 2nd Leia so it was more in line with the later ones.

January 28, 2016 – LOTS OF ART STUFF TODAY
I even did some droids! Which I usually hate drawing anything mechanical. And that unfinished one of Kevin as a jedi – I actually did finish that, I just never uploaded it for some reason.

October 10, 2016 – 3 HALF-ASSED GALADRIELS
So in my “Digging Up The Past” month in 2016, as I mentioned in my fav posts entry last week, I found all the original art for the SunDowner print issue, and it was like looking at an alternate reality, because it was obviously my art but I didn’t recognize any of it. It was SO WEIRD. I pulled a couple of them out, cleaned them up, and put some colour on them one day just to see what it looked like.

October 24, 2016 – A WHOLE LOT OF STUFF
And then that led me down the path of… what would it look like if I were to draw my SunDowner characters today? So I did.

And then I was like, I need to start drawing more again. That was fun.

November 14, 2016 – IS IT DISNEY TIME YET??
During our late October Disney trip I did a bunch of sketches in the car ride there and back. I pulled some of the Disney ones in to finish them…

December 1, 2016 – VARIOUS ART AND STUFF
I also discovered I really like just sitting in front of the tv and doodling stuff on the tablet. None of them were super interesting but enjoyable to do. Also finished up a Moana to go with the previous Disney stuff:

January 20, 2017 – SOME ART, SOME STUFF, SOME DOLORES
And then I thought it would be fun to do a Star Wars series similar to the SunDowner set I’d just done a couple of months before. I drew these up in a sketchbook and scanned them in just like old times.

February 9, 2017 – SOME ART AND SOME EMBROIDERY AND A DAY OFF
As usual the process tightened up a bit as I went along and the earlier versions don’t really match the later ones. I went back and redid a couple of the faces on the older ones later. Han here was more of the direction they started taking:

February 21, 2017 – A SUPER QUICK ART POST
I was having fun adding every single one I finished to one big file, though.

March 3, 2017 – GO, AND NEVER DARKEN MY TOWELS AGAIN
And then it got to the point I started feeling like I was OVER working them which was not the original point. The colouring on them was supposed to be quick and simple and I was getting too bogged down in it especially in the clothes.

March 13, 2017 – I HATE EVERYTHING
So I tried to scale back, and I went back and tried to simplify some of the previous ones I hadn’t been happy with. But I kinda lost the plot and didn’t quite finish it all. I still have an unfinished Chewbacca sitting on my hard drive.

May 19, 2017 – OW MY FACE
Some more boredom tv doodles. But I liked this one.

June 22, 2017 – A GIANT ART POST
When I went through all my old art and got it readded to my site the year before, I thought it would be fun to redraw some of them, and this old 1998 Amidala one is one I decided to tackle.

And then Chase had gotten me a greyscale sketchbook for Christmas and I finally broke it out that summer.

June 29, 2017 – WIGS AND DYE AND SPIDER
And then I had fun doing that, so I redid the Leia from the same series.

August 29, 2017 – WE CAN DRESS REAL NEAT FROM OUR HATS TO OUR FEET
And there was a whole bunch more of those grey sketchbook stuff in between, but in August I discovered some lovely new PS brushes and started experimenting with them. First I pulled out the Poe I’d done from the year before and re-did it..

And then I had a Padme I’d been trying different colouring styles on, I decided to start painting over the top of it, too:

But I never finished either, they were both just playing around.

December 28, 2017 – I HAVE GAZILLION THINGS TO POST
And most recently… back to trying to do something quick and simple, a TLJ Leia.

And that’s where we end. What’s next?! Who knows.
