snowmageddon – the revenge

Well I didn’t expect last Monday’s snow to completely wreck my entire week of sewing, but it did.

I was expecting 2 shipments of interfacing – 1 of a lighter weight for the bags and 1 of a medium weight for the Star Wars dress. And as I mentioned in last week’s post, I ordered a couple more yards of the Star Wars fabric and hallelujah they shipped right away and were supposed to be here Thursday! But of course they were not.

I needed the interfacing for the bags before I could continue. I needed the fabric and interfacing for the dress before I could continue. So I had nothing to work on this past weekend. Everything is supposedly arriving today.

Also delayed by the snowmageddon – our homechef meals were supposed to be here Thursday, now arriving today, so that’s not going to be any good anymore. Luna’s food was also delayed so we had to do not 1 but 2 runs to the grocery store to get whatever wet food we could to hold her over.

The problem was is that by Wednesday/Thursday, all that snow had turned to ice. So roads were bad. This week? It’s going to start raining and get up to 60 degrees, so it will all disappear LOL

I worked on some art stuff for the trip, designed a magnet, glued together one of my christmas decorations I broke while taking christmas down, and finally decided to find something to work on.

SO… surprise, my first costume of 2024 is something I wasn’t planning on.

Long story short but I needed a Scarlet Witch disneybound outfit. I looked at the Her Universe dress and didn’t want to spend $50+ on it because I knew I wouldn’t wear it again. I thought maybe wearing a black dress I have and just make like a red shawl to go with it? But then I started digging through my fabric and realized I had enough fabric leftover from the actual costume I could make something. Decided to basically do a skater dress – used my favourite leotard pattern and just lengthened the skirt as much as posssible so I could then just trim off what I didn’t need. Got the basic pieces cut on Friday…

Spent Saturday morning basting all of the front panel pieces together.

I got a little more in-depth with the front panel and hip panels than I planned. Originally I was just going to make them out of red fabric and that was it. I had enough red ponte fabric leftover from Seven of Nine for it. Then I dug around some more and found some of the dark red spandex I used for the trim on my real Scarlet Witch costume, so I used that too, and added some of the black in also since I still had a ton of that.

Finished it Sunday morning – not bad, about a day and a half of work?

It’s not perfect, like if I were making this for a con (or I just had more time in general), I would’ve fixed a few things, there’s a few places on the collar and hip panels that are wobbly or where the thread didn’t catch and a corner is sticking up. But since it’s just for fun and time is short, it’s just gonna be what it’s gonna be.

The skirt didn end up a little bit shorter than I wanted, but I was already going to be wearing black shorts under it anyway so nbd really.

Now I just need to fix my Wanda crown.

And I’ll go ahead and write up a construction page on this before I forget everything.

So still on the to-do list:
-edit magnet
-cath’s wedding shoes
-make the clutch bags
-make my Star Wars dress
-figure out my pirate outfit

Notes on a few of those — I did stumble across a small cache of the lighter weight interfacing I wanted for the clutches Saturday night, it was tucked away inside of some fabric. So I did get one clutch bag constructed last night – I haven’t sewn it onto the frame yet, but it’s ready to go, so that’s a start at least.

My pirate outfit is MOSTLY figured out – I’m going to wear the black corset and shirt I got for Six with my blue Belle skirt for an Ariel look, but I want more around the skirt so I’m thinking about trying my Stevie Nicks skirt on underneath the blue skirt and see what that looks like, and tuck up one side of the blue skirt. Might make the waist too bulky but we’ll see. I also want to put together some kind of belt, might steal some doodads off my Valkyrie belt and I want a dinglehopper to hang off of it. I’ve got a hat coming, and I need to decorate it.

Biggest hurdle at this point is my dress which isn’t even a thing yet. I mean I did the mockup as yall have seen in previous posts, and I cut the 2 skirt panels out, but that’s it so far. I was waiting on this new fabric. Hopefully it’s here today so I can dive in as soon as the bags are done. After doing the mockup, I think it’ll go together pretty easily, but y’know… knock on wood.

Speaking of the clutch bags I did have to do a little photoshoot with my aunt’s dress before I cut into it.

Will clean these up later to send to my aunt and cousins.

I am using the lining for the bags, but I will be picking off some of the appliques as decorations towards the end.

OH and I nearly forgot…

Star Wars liked one of my tiktok videos! Cool!

Anyway, I was on the fence about posting art here or in a separate post, and just decided I’m just going to dump it here.
Got some new pen tips for my apple pencil which has made drawing in procreate SO much better and miles miles miles ahead of my wacom. I’ve been drawing almost every night and here’s the results so far.

Padme

Ahsoka

Then I got tired of Star Wars ladies and decided I’d draw a Trek lady, here’s Troi.

So I think I’ve gotten the drawing part down, but colouring is another story. I need to watch some tutorials because thus far in my playing with the different painting brushes in procreate, I haven’t been happy with the results.

Watching Manos and just messing around with some of the paintbrushes.

Finally after looking around for door magnets for our door for the trip, I decided I wasn’t going to pay $30 for 2 magnets and I’d just buy magnet paper and make my own.

And next week I’ll put up a post on the next portion of the Mid century/Dapper Day project. I also need to put up a full page for each of them like I did with the Padme project.
