Misadventures in Attempting to Wear Old Costumes

So prepping for this weekend’s photoshoot has consumed my entire week.

But before I dig into that, I guess I should show the results of my Anna Valerious wig re-curling:

It’s not perfect but I am pretty darn happy with it, and it’s miles ahead of where it started out. I may wear it for Ozma too, instead of the Arwen wig!

So I started pulling out costumes for Saturday’s photoshoot on Monday and at first everything seemed good. All the pieces were together, not a lot had to be fixed.

Anna’s corset and undercorset are shedding because I used that dang stretch pleather on it. I should start a campaign warning costumers of EVER using that crap if they want their costumes to last. The only good part – it gives those parts a nice weathered look.

Well I typed up a picking list so I could make sure I had everything accounted for, and quickly started to run into problems. The missing items were:

My Arwen elf ears
My Arwen evenstar necklace
My Ozma wand
The gold tip off the end of my Ame-Comi Wonder Woman sword

The ears were found quickly – I have a bin in my room of “homeless” costume parts and I found 3 (3!) pairs of elf ears in there. Cross that one off the list.

My Arwen necklace… it was curious why it wasn’t in my Arwen bin. So I looked in my jewelry box. Nope. My costume jewelry box. Nope. My backup jewelry box. Nope. It devolved into pulling out every bin in costume room (nope), even storage drawer in my sewing room (nope), every cup, box or small container with stuff in it (nope), every drawer in my closet where I keep stuff (nope), every lunchbox where I keep stuff (nope), every drawer on my nightstand (nope), every costume bin and drawer in the garage (nope)… basically my entire night turned into one giant search. I was so frustrated. I was also keeping an eye out for my Ozma wand (which I knew was broken and needed repaired), but didn’t see it anywhere, either…

The only place I could think they MIGHT be is in my closet in my old room at my parents’ house. I still have a bunch of stuff in there I’ve never gotten. I didn’t want to drive all the way out there for a “maybe” though – I ended up buying a new Arwen necklace on Amazon Prime that’ll be here today. Mom went in there and peeked for me last night and didn’t see my Ozma wand anyway, so I’m going to try to find something to replace it tonight.

Still looking for that end piece of my AC Wonder Woman sword. I saw it when we cleaned up the guest room a couple of months ago, so I’m sure it’s hanging around in there somewhere.

In the midst of looking through EVERYTHING I did find a couple of things I’d been missing:

My Utena ring, which I couldn’t find when I shot my Utena and Nanami costumes a couple of years ago (I had to make a makeshift one out of an old cell phone charm and a ring blank). Relieved to have found it.
My Dragon Con 2008 badge. I wanted to get all of my DC badges framed with my carpet square, but 2008 was MIA. I found it in the side pocket of one of my sewing room stools.

So anyway, everything is mostly ready to go at this point:

I’m shooting:

Arwen white dress
Arwen blood red dress
Ozma of Oz
Imperial Officer
Anna Valerious
Lessa
Bespin Escape Leia
Ame-Comi Wonder Woman

(Very 2004-heavy!)

Last night I got everything ironed. Tried on a couple of things I was worried about fitting into – Ozma was my biggest worry, and it fit fine. Yay! Then I tried on Arwen… and I have, um, outgrown parts of it. As usually with things I’ve outgrown from that era, it’s the ribcage/bust area that’s not fitting. Tonight I’m going to try to see if I can corset down to fit in it, if not, I’ll lightly stitch a panel of white spandex in the zipper opening.

I’ve really got to get started on my Megacon costume… I’ve let this photoshoot take precedence over it!
