It’s been a few days since I posted! I’ve been busy.
First off, I’m moving all of my photos from flickr to smugmug. Not deleting my flickr account just yet, since that would break ALL of the pictures on my blog … but I’m getting everything moved over and set up so I can then start working on updating everything on the website (ugh). It’s going to take a while but so far I’m SUPER happy with smugmug and can’t wait to be free of flickr forever. The nail in the coffin was them changing the HTML share code (which is what I use on my blog!) so it has some ugly frame around it and includes the title and description. I can remove the extra coding but it’s a pain in the ass. It’s just another example of how flickr has lost touch with its user base. So I’ve been a little busy with moving everything
Otherwise I’ve been sewing like crazy! I had Friday off as a sewing day. Kevin & I went swimming in the morning then I sewed all afternoon… but unfortunately it was not a successful sewing day. I kept screwing stuff up and finally just called it quits. I mean, after you sew a simple CAPE wrong for the second time (including finishing all of the interior edges…) it’s time to take a break. So we went and saw Ant-Man which was fun.
Saturday and Sunday… more sewing! I’m powering through stuff! Yesterday I started a new medicine which made me feel awful, so I ended up going back home and sleeping most of the day though I did also get some shoes painted. Ran to Hobby Lobby for a few necessities last night (100% out of red thread) and also grabbed some beads for my Dona U&W necklace. I got to the counter, looked down at the price of them. I’d gotten 5 cards and they were $7 a piece! No thanks! That would have been a nasty surprise when they rang them up and suddenly my thread, wighead, elastic and beads is a $60 purchase! So I still haven’t gotten the beads for the necklace. I’ll go to Michael’s this weekend, I really want to get the whole thing marked off my list.
So — progress on everything.
1. Donna U&W
As of Tuesday last week the dress is FINISHED!
The hem is still laying a little funny but I really don’t know if I want to pull it apart again. The belt is sewn on center front and at the sides, and snaps in the back. I was able to make it with no closures! It just slides on over my head.
So like I said I still need to make the necklace. I got my tassel for the end of it:
I actually ended up with 6 tassels because I misread the description LOL
I also got my shoes painted which you can see below in the Captain Marvel section. I just need to get a thin headband to attach my hair beads to and that’s all that is left.
2. Princess Leia – Comic Suit
I haven’t mentioned yet that I’m doing this one, not even here — so surprise here’s the surprise costume.
Last week I started on the suit. I’m using an off-white knit, doubled, and lined in a nude spandex, so it’s pretty heavy duty. Unfortunately as I was cutting out the pattern pieces I discovered I was juuuuuuuuust short of fabric. Like, I had enough for all of the pieces – but I still needed some for the zipper flap and the patches. I had to go order another yard… only to discover the webstore has a $20 minimum purchase… so I dug up another yard of fabric I liked to make it $21 … only to discover that shipping was $15. So my one yard of fabric I needed was $36. Sucks.
I used Yaya Han’s McCall’s bodysuit pattern for this. I haven’t put the sleeves and legs on yet, since I want to attach the patches first.
I also got the cape made (the cape I messed up twice if you read above), got the gloves made (the suck but they’re wearable), and my boots covered and boot toppers made. Not a great pic of the boots but I was in a hurry.
I pulled out Chase’s Han belt and with a few adjustments it will fit me!! I won’t have to make a belt! The holster sits a little long but oh well.
3. Captain Marvel
So Saturday I cut out another copy of the same bodysuit pattern using some leftover green spandex, threw it on the mannequin and drew out the seam lines for the Captain Marvel suit. Got that transferred over to new pattern pieces and just started pounding it out.
I got the upper section nearly finished – I still have to hem a sleeve and obviously add the yellow stripes and starburst applique. Buttons on the collar, too. I got the legs finished and put on yesterday night, but I did not like how they were sitting. They seemed to be sitting too low and wrinkling a lot, and the crotch area was too wide which was adding to the wrinkling. So I took them off, cut some of the leotard leg openings away and I’m going to reattach them tonight. I also had to take up the torso section through the waist — things I will have to remember when I start adding the legs to the Leia suit above, because I’m sure I’ll have to do the same to it.
I got my base boots:
And yesterday I painted the heels of them red, and also painted my Donna shoes:
So tonight I’ll get the legs back on and fitted, and work on the boots.
4. Pink Georgian
I ordered fabric samples!
I was hoping a cotton velvet would work since it would be so much cheaper. But the silk velvet was exaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaactly what I had wanted in my head so I bit the bullet.
Yum.
I found 5yds of undyed silk habotai that I’d originally bought for Elsa – sorry, Elsa. I’m going to use that as my underskirt and stomacher fabric. Also picked up my lining and other stuff over the weekend, and ordered dye and fabric paint yesterday. I’ve got all the basics now — just need to pick a few more trims and fun things as I need them. I’m hoping to get these two spandex suits out of the way and finished by this weekend so I can spend August on this dress and needed repairs.
5. Needed Repairs/Updates
Donna Fires of Pompeii — I’ve got to rehem this, fix an issue on one of the insets, and redo the gold trim.
Peggy — I still want to take the jacket up. Whether I do that or not I don’t know. I’m scared to take it apart. I AM going to restyle the wig. I think I may wear it “down.”
Anne B — I want to make the french hood that goes with the dress I made last year. I kept all of my fabric scraps. I’ve got to order boning for the pink dress above so I could get my hat notions from the same place.
